ENMAX commits $150,000 to Aspen to help flood-affected and vulnerable Albertans
While flood levels have receded, the level of stress on Albertans is on the rise. At Aspen, we’ve seen an increase in the number of families in need and we are continuing to support evacuees struggling to pay for food and shelter as they rebuild their lives.
The crisis caused by the flooding underscores the need to support Albertans facing challenging circumstances.
ENMAX has responded with a three-year, $150,000 commitment to support Aspen to help flood-affected and vulnerable Albertans and identify ways to help them manage their long-term energy needs.
"We've had families who helped with evacuees, and in turn have ended up in trouble with not enough money for food, shelter and bills for themselves," said Shirley Purves, CEO of Aspen.
“As we deal with the ripple effect of the flood for years to come, our goal is to support people to break the cycle of poverty--for life. This partnership with ENMAX will go a long way in helping Aspen reach that goal."
ENMAX is also committing $150,000 over three years to Distress Centre, which has seen a 38 per cent increase in calls since the flooding.
"This is our way to reach out to families and individuals during a time of need and assist them in making ends meet and building life skills before their situation becomes dire, said Gianna Manes, President and CEO, ENMAX.
"With our connection to Aspen and Distress Centre, we can refer vulnerable customers to these organizations to help them with their immediate financial strain and the underlying challenges they may be facing. By combining our expertise, we will be able to have a larger, long-term impact in helping those in our community who need it the most."
The two agencies will use the money in various ways, including funding an energy specialist for Aspen who can assist struggling families better manage their power consumption.
Distress Centre is planning to use the ENMAX donation to support its volunteer and Emergency Financial Assistance Program.
